How to lead from behind ?

Have you ever been in a situation where your team is not working properly ? Maybe nobody seems to be motivated, or you're doing all the work. You were like thinking why am I doing the work ? Let me tell you why this happens all the time in school, workplace or the government.

"You are leading them as a leader"

This method of leadership might work for the Spartans. But I can ensure you this won't work in the 21st century. People are not motivated when you:

1) Tell them what to do as an authority
2) Belittle their potential and abilities
3) You do everything having a discussion with them

In the book 'Drive' by Daniel Pink, people are motivated by autonomy, mastery and passion. If you were acting like Hitler or Stalin, nobody is going to be motivated to do anything.

What you should do ?

1) Show your vulnerability. Don't act tough and try to shoulder all the tasks. Show your team members you are just a normal human and you need their help too.

2) Make rules as a team. When everyone is involved in the process, they will feel accountable to follow them too.

3) Let them do it their way and you would be surprised by the result

I am not a good leader

Instead of telling you more steps and just follow them. Let me tell you my personal experience for the past 6 years in school as a leader. I am a really bad leader. Why do I say that:

1) I plan and do all the tasks without consulting with my team members.

2) I always think I can do a better job at something than my team members. Therefore, I will do it my way.

I would like to apologies to all my team members for what I did. I think they might not feel offended, but I promise to lead from behind. Let us all do it together.
