What I think ?
I think myths exist for a reason and it is the illustration of social norms or even the history of certain race of people. Th ability of a myth to spread like an epidemic lies in the lack of questioning from the public. In Malaysia, most teenagers would just accept any kind of statement circulated by their friends through email or Facebook without some hard thinking. These teenagers would then forward the message to more friends and before you realize, the myth has become the undeniable truth. Why do we love myth ?
Wow Factor
Firstly, the content of the myth is often exaggerated to your wildest imagination and this provides what I call the 'miracle' factor. Teenagers just love to hope for the impossible, while that is not necessarily a bad thing, but this attitude had compromised their ability to see the flaws in a particular statement.
Peer Pressure
In many cases, the teenager is able to see some errors in the particular statement, but he or she just refused to speak out due to peer pressure. If he were to speak against the 'world', it would lead to possible isolation from the group of friends. Besides that, waking people from their beautiful dreams is always painful. This lead to passive attitude towards myth by those that actually the truth.
Follow the crowd
Our whole educational system is built upon the concept of, follow or be left behind. The teaching framework is responsible in turning promising young students to mindless zombies that only care about following the instructions given by teachers or authority. The fault lies on both system and students. The system is to be blamed not for placing emphasis on academic excellence, but absence of critical thinking in the classroom. I believe one can still be creative and academically accomplished.
The fault also lies in the student for the lack of initiative to change their current condition. All we hear are grunts and complaints from students. Do they actually to do their part ? When you can't change the environment, change yourself.
Conclusion
Just sit back and think how many myths had slipped through the smart brain of yours. Therefore, as a bonus for staying until the end of the article, let us take a look by a post from Lifehacker about brain myths. Enjoy!
